An excellent
team display at St.
James' Park on Wednesday night saw Newcastle deservedly qualify for the
semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
A memorable first half brace from Sandro Tonali trebled his Toon tally,
before Fabian Schar ended the contest after being set up by the unselfish Bruno
Guimaraes.
There was a late consolation effort for Yoane Wissa after Brentford came to life
once the tie was over.
Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes both rattled the goal frame and Martin Dubravka made
some timely stops, but it was more comfortable than Eddie Howe could
have expected after the recent league loss at the Bees.
Fielding an unchanged side from that which defeated Leicester City 4-0,
United immediately went on the offensive and Joelinton soon had a shot
blocked.
The breakthrough wasn't long in coming after Tino Livramento's cross from
the right was cleared to the edge of the area by Nathan Collins, falling for
Tonali to blast a fine first-time strike into the Leazes End net.
That lead was doubled two minutes before the break when Anthony Gordon's
corner from the right was met by Tonali, who was off the ground when he
skillfully guided another first-time effort beyond Mark Flekken.
Joelinton played his part in that second goal by jostling with Wissa as the
ball came over to create space, but the Brazilian failed to reappear after
the break - the
victim of a stray boot to the head earlier in the game from Nathan Collins
after a scramble in the home box.
The third goal arrived on 69 minutes following another corner, Lewis Hall's
shot rebounding to Guimaraes for him to roll the ball across the six yard
box and Schar tap home from point-blank range.
A Bees side who have struggled on their travels this season were curiously
out of sorts for the most part; only belatedly raising their game when 0-3
down and United had made a further trio of substitutions.
Ben Mee and Yoane Wisse missed half-chances before the latter took Bryan
Mbeumo's pass and shot past Martin Dubravka in the first of three added
minutes.
That was far too little, far too late for Thomas Frank's side though, who
could have easily have conceded half a dozen goals here, despite top scorer
Alexander Isak having a quiet night by his recent standards.
Guimaraes and Schar were both booked for the second time in this competition
and as a consequence will be suspended for the
semi-final first leg.
Sean Longstaff however will be eligible to play after serving his one match
ban and hopefully Sven Botman will be back in the squad and up to speed by
then.
Arsenal and Liverpool also made it into the last four on Wednesday, with the
draw taking place after the Spurs versus Manchester United tie on Thursday
night.
Those
two-legged ties are scheduled be played in the weeks
commencing January 6th and February 3rd, ahead of the Wembley final on
Sunday March 16th.
Crystal Palace's quarter-final defeat to Arsenal means that should Newcastle
lose in the semi-final, their PL home fixture against the Eagles would go
ahead as scheduled during the weekend of the final.

after his only previous appointment involving NUFC, a 3-0 PL win over
Fulham.

"I think it’s a good performance, tough game.
"I think the goals were hugely important. Sandro’s first one
is an unbelievable strike and the second one is very difficult to do
what he did in that moment.
"Two great
finishes from him and I think those early goals really helped us, could’ve
been more in the second half but we’re delighted to get through.
"I think it’s brilliant
to see from my perspective. He’s a big signing and you want your
big signings to do well and settle quickly.
"He’s been here a while,
but has had very little football. Nights like tonight will build
connections with him and the supporters even stronger, I’m just
really pleased for him on a personal level.
"The tweak in
position has definitely helped him, he is a lot more comfortable
when he is deeper on the pitch.
"He is showing all the
qualities that we knew when we signed him. It is just about finding
the right balance for him and the team.
"I think my focus was just
on tonight and trying to get through. Of course we’ve been able to
do that, then you’re looking at the draw and seeing the teams left
in.
"It’s going to be a
really tough game in the semi-final, but I think for us to be there
is the most important thing.
"We’ll take on whoever we
get and do our absolute best to try and get through to a second
final, that would be an incredible thing."

"Bruno and Fabby are two massive players for us. They’re very
consistent performers and we’re going to miss them massively, but
that’s what the squad is for.
"It goes without saying
that you want your best players available for the biggest games, and
they’re two huge players for us. But we just have to accept it.
There’s nothing we can do about it, we just have to get other
players ready to perform.
"I thought Joe Willock
looked bright when he came on today, so that’s a big plus for him.
Sven (Botman) is not too far away, and hopefully that can be
added competition for the centre-back positions.
"We have players returning
from injury, and hopefully the likes of Sven came make a big
difference.
"Then we should also have Emil Krafth back in the
not-too-distant future. I think Emil could be back (for the
semi-final).
"He’s improving nicely. He’s still some weeks off, but by
the time that comes around, he could be available.”
On Joelinton's injury:
"Joey had a cut to his ear, which I think was quite nasty, and
he’s gone away to get that looked at."

A reminder that London Kings Cross station is closed once again on the
weekend of this game.
Rather than terminating and starting at St. Neots as per the Palace game, LNER services will
start and terminate at Peterborough with coach transfers to and from Bedford
connecting with London St. Pancras trains.

between there and Kings Cross).

Tuesday saw the second of
two international friendlies between England U16s and their Dutch
counterparts played in recent days at St.George's Park.
The Young Lions won 2-1 on Sunday and were victorious once again in
the second meeting, this time 3-2.
Newcastle's Michael Mills and Sam Alabi were in the England
squad, with Mills starting in the first game while Alabi was on the
bench and the roles reversed when the teams faced each other again
(sub usage is tbc).

Saturday saw United's youngsters
bounce back from a 1-7 loss at Manchester City last time out,
registering a first home league win of the season at Little
Benton.
Ahead through Fraser Harper's maiden Toon goal in the 29th minute,
Matheos Ferreira doubled Newcastle's advantage in the final seconds
of the opening half.
An 89th minute effort from Joe Brayson then rounded off the victory,
condemning Forest to their sixth straight loss in the U18 Premier
League.

The draw for
this season's FA Youth Cup Fourth Round gave Newcastle
U18s a home tie with Aston Villa.
That's a rerun of the Sixth Round tie in April 2021, when the
Villans recorded a 6-1 success at Gallowgate.
Goals from Joe Brayson and Michael Mills were enough to defeat
Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 at Whitley Park in the Third Round.
Villa meanwhile scored six times without reply at home to Accrington Stanley.

Ivor Broadis born, Poplar, Isle of Dogs. (1953-55)
Christened
Ivan, the forward began his career with minor league sides Finchley and then
Northfleet United before joining Spurs on amateur forms - where he was
mistakenly registered as Ivor.
A dispute over wages saw him reject professional terms at White Hart Lane and
after his family were bombed out of their East End home in the blitz, Broadis
joined the RAF as a navigator.
Undergoing some of his training in the USA, Ivor guesting for Millwall
and Carlisle while serving in the RAF,
Posted to an airbase near Carlisle where he met his wife and was demobbed,
Broadis remained in the area and was appointed player-boss of the Cumbrians at
the age of just 23.
Ivor then sold himself to the mackems in 1949 for £18,000, claiming that it
was in the best financial interests of the club.
His next port of call was Manchester City in 1951, then on to Gallowgate in
1953 for a £20,000 fee, debuting in a 1-3 loss at Sheffield United that
October.
The first two of Ivor's 18 goals in 51 games outings then arrived a week later,
as Cardiff City were beaten 4-0 on Tyneside.
Playing for England in the 1954 World Cup finals, Ivor's omission from
Newcastle's 1955 FA Cup final-winning team against his former side Manchester
City led to his exit soon after and return to Carlisle.
Ending his player career over the border for Queen of the South, he pursued a
career as football journalist for many years after and was part of the press
corps in Budapest for United's 1969 Fairs Cup Final victory.
Living near Carlisle after his retirement, Ivor's death was recorded in April
2019 aged 96, at which point he had the distinction of being
Newcastle's oldest surviving player.
1955 Mickey Barker born, Bishop Auckland. (1972-79)
Left back who made his debut in 1-0 victory at West Ham in April 1975
- the first of 29 first team outings (including two as sub).
Moving on to Gillingham in 1979, Mickey returned to
the region the following year with non-league sides Ferryhill & Bishop Auckland.
A move to Hartlepool United followed in 1982, following a spell playing out in
the USA and Mickey ended his career with Bishops, also running a pub in the town.
1959 Kevin Dillon born,
s*nderland.
(1989-91)
Midfielder who began his career as an apprentice at
Birmingham City and was handed his senior team debut in 1977 by then-Blues boss
Sir Alf Ramsey.
1983 saw him join Portsmouth, in whose colours he was dismissed at SJP
following a clash with Peter Jackson in December 1987.
Dillon's former Fratton Park boss Jim Smith brought him to
SJP on a free ahead of the 1989/90 season and he debuted in
a 5-2 home win over Leeds United that August.
With
Mark McGhee and Mick Quinn shooting the side into the
playoffs, Dillon occupied a midfield anchor role to good effect.
However he failed to find the net for United in 76 outings, with his
duck-breaking efforts resulting in some appalling misses - none worse than a game at Wolves when he contrived to
miss an unguarded goal with no
home player in the same postcode.
The arrival of Ossie Ardiles in April 1991 saw the likes of Lee Clark, David Roche and Lee Makel
promoted from
the reserves and Dillon dropped before his contract was ended.
An unsuccessful trial with his
beloved mackems saw him appearing for their reserves in a friendly at
Blyth Spartans.
No deal was forthcoming however and his next port of call was Reading, playing
for the Elm Park side until 1994.
After playing and coaching at Stevenage Borough, he joined Yeovil Town
before returning to Reading in 1995 as a coach (and turning out for Fareham
Town in 1997).
Dillon took over as Reading's caretaker boss in the wake of the 2003 defection of Alan Pardew
from the Royals to West Ham. However, the Royals opted to overlook him and appoint Steve Coppell
instead, with
Dillon remaining at the Madejski as his number two until Coppell's
departure in summer 2009.
After spending some time scouting for Watford, Kevin became boss of Aldershot Town in November 2009 but he and his assistant,
former mackem, Gary Owers, were sacked in January 2011.
Dillon later worked as a youth scout for the Scottish FA.

Charlie Spencer's 35th minute header was fisted into the
goal by a City player but a spot kick was awarded.
Up stepped Frank Hudspeth, only to drive his shot straight
at the grateful Campbell.
Gallacher was then fouled in the 54th minute and elected
to take the spot kick himself, but was also denied by
Campbell.

The game marked the only
appearance of trialist defender Chris Zoricich, a New
Zealander who moved to England to become a professional
footballer.
After over a decade playing in
Australia and New Zealand, "Zorro" briefly returned to England
in 2003, training with Mansfield
Town but failing to secure a contract.

games saw the Magpies visit the Knowsley Road home of St.
Helens Rugby League team.
And on a chilly night when Shola Ameobi netted in a 1-1
draw, the debut display of Olivier Bernard caused us to
comment that he had shown "undoubted
potential".

A week after being beaten in a League Cup Quarter
Final tie at Chelsea, Newcastle were back in London with
the chance of ending the evening top of the league.
Battered by the Gunners but only conceding once, Ray Parlour's dismissal just before
the half-time break gave United some hope.
Andy O'Brien headed in the equaliser in
front of the away end, before Craig
Bellamy walked for allegedly striking cheat Ashley Cole
in the face (later rescinded).
Future Magpie Sol Campbell was penalised for fouling
Laurent Robert, Alan Shearer converting the resultant
spot kick.
Robert himself then strode
clear to secure United's first win in the capital for over five years: a
remarkable night that celebrity fork bender Uri Geller later claimed credit for....

2010 Newcastle's Premier
League game at Birmingham City was called off just three
hours before kick-off.
The decision came shortly before noon after a pitch
inspection by match referee Mike Jones - poor conditions in the vicinity of the ground affected the
judgment.
Pitch and areas near the stadium were navigable
but fans, players and officials were struggling to reach St. Andrew's, including Blues
boss Alex McLeish.
